Over 65% of cancers can go away if we take care of our diet and nutrition. Non-smokers leading cause of death is obesity. Food, Calories and Cancer Risk Food is the energy source for the body Food can either decrease or increase risk of cancer The link between diet and cancer calories are important Fat and Total Calories Carbohydrates, fats, proteins are the building blocks Its not the calories you eat—it’s the calories you don’t burn off that increase cancer risk** If you restrict the calorie intake by 30% (1/3), it reduces breast cancer risk. BMI >25 overweight >30 Obese >35 Very obese Percentage of Obese Adult Population 17.6 Colorado 2007 30.6 Mississippi 2007 19.1 Colorado 2010 33.8 Mississippi 2010 Amount of obese individuals are continuing to increase. Why does obesity lead to cancer? The excess weight increases several things the ability to resist the insulin Glucose in the blood does not respond to insulin Insulin is a growth factor more weight = more insulin we need for the same function The amt of insulin receptors increase The amt of binding protein decrease Apoptosis is reduced cell proliferation increases = tumor Over the years both men and women have had a dramatic increase in obesity.
