Kin 110—Lecture #14 March 1 st , 2010 Why are Americans getting bigger? o Too many kcals in? Too few kcals out? o Is it that simple or is the composition of the diet important? Fat? CHO? Protein? o Over past 25 years, CHO in U.S. diet has gone UP . o The % of Americans who are overweight has gone UP during the same period. The Atkins Diet o 1972 (The Diet Revolution) Diet plan consists of restricting CHO intake but as much protein and fat as you want to o “When you follow a controlled CHO approach, you get what I cal a “metabolic advantage” o Possibilities: 1. Lose kcal b/c of ketones in urine 2. Burn more kcal converting protein to Cho 3. Burn more kcal due to increased thermogenesis with high protein intake. 1. How does restricting carbohydrates in the diet theoretically cause weight loss? Basic Premise: Severe restriction of CHO causes you to break down body fat for energy leading to weight loss. 2.
