Wondered whether oxidation of CHO and fats also supplied energy for exercise. o Work= force x distance o Force= body weight against gravity o Distance = vertical distance Estimate use of protein for energy by measuring nitrogen in sweat. Sweat nitrogen is higher when Cho supplies are low. 1. How much does protein contribute to energy expenditure under “normal” conditions? Used fact that PRO is 16.25% nitrogen to turn grams of N into grams of PRO At 4 kcal/gram could calculate kcals from PRO. Compared that with kcals total work Kcals from PRO = about 25% Kcals total work Energy from protein breakdown was not the major contributor to exercise energy. Use of protein (amino acids that make up protein) for energy is low.
