Kin 110—Lecture #27 Friday April 23 rd , 2010 In sports, low body fat is necessary for success at the highest levels. o Necessity for low weight pressures athletes to restrict meals or other methods for low body weight/low fat. o Not uncommon for athletes to develop eating disorders to maintain unnatural weight. o Not just women; wrestlers, ski jumpers, football players. Eating Disorders and Disordered Eating- NOT the same o Disordered eating- variety of abnormal eating behaviors used to reduce weight. o Eating disorder- meets DSM 1V criteria condition involving long term eating patterns harming the body. Multiple factors contribute to eating disorder o Dieting/genetic and biological factors o Family environment o Unrealistic media images o Personality traits Anorexia Nervosa- unhealthful behaviors are used to maintain body weight less than 85% of expected weight. o 90-95% are young girls and women. 700,000-1.4 million US women develop anorexia. o
