Kin 110—Lecture #30 Wednesday April 21 st , 2010 Energy balance- weight gain and loss is regulated by hormones like leptin Regulation of body weight is more sensitive to weight loss than to weight gain. o Weight loss causes a strong response- appetite increases=eat more Lower resting metabolic rate and less exercise= regain of lost weight When people gain weight the “eat less, exercise more” signal does not seem as strong. o 98% people who lose weight, gain it all back within 2 years. National weight control registry- list of people who lost 30 pounds and kept it off 1 year. o Currently 5000 people registered. What are secrets to success? 1. Low calorie, low fat diet AND 2. High level of physical activity Close to an hour a day of physical activity was key in high weight loss. What makes exercise so effective? o Energy expenditure; 60 min of moderate exercise expends 500-900 kcal. Actual energy expended on exercise machines varies a great deal.
