Electrostatics We have seen a property of objects called mass . Mass is responsible for the Gravitational Force . (S.I. unit is the kilogram (kg).) Another property of objects is charge . Charge is responsible for Electric Force . (S.I. unit is the coulomb (C)). Electrostatics is the study of: 1. force fields set up by charged objects that don’t move. 2. forces between charged objects that don’t move. 1

Charged Objects Atoms 1. Most are neutral: Number of electrons equal number of protons. 2. Positive ions : atoms that have lost electrons . 3. Negative ions : atoms that have gained electrons . Objects 1. Most are neutral, composed of neutral atoms. 2. Some have a negative charge because they somehow gained electrons . 3. Some have a positive charge because they somehow lost electrons .
