HWK 36 (SOLUTIONS) (due 4/23/07) Read chp. 36 sections 1-3 Do 1,2,3,4 1. Like electrical charges repel; unlike electrical charges attract. Similarly, like magnetic poles repel; unlike magnetic poles attract. 2. Electrical charges can exist alone. For example, an electron or a proton can exist by itself. Magnetic poles, however, can only exist in North- South pairs. 3. A magnetic field is a force field created by moving electrical charges . Since an electrical current consists of moving charges, we can say that a current is a source of a magnetic field. 4. An electron has a built-in angular momentum which we call ”spin” and this spin is a source of an e±ective current, and therefore, a magnetic field. So, every elctron is a small magnet. An atom need not be a magnet, if it only has paired electrons. Paired electrons occupy the same space and therefore their spins and magnetic fields cancel out. Extra question:
