Unformatted text preview: Ionic Equations and Net Ionic Equations We’ve been dealing with chemical equations. We’ve been: 1. writing them from word equations, which includes being able to translate names of compounds into chemical formulas. 2. balancing them so that there are the same number of atoms of each type on both sides of the equation. 3. completing them when one or more of the reactants or products are omitted. 4. predicting whether they will actually go based on: (a) activity (Table J) for single replacement re- actions. (b) production of precipitate ( insoluble solid ) (Ta- ble F), insoluble gas, production of a molecular compound, and/or formation of water ( double replacement reactions ). So far we haven’t seen ions explicitly in the chemical equations although most of the compounds we’ve been dealing with are ionic compounds. 1 Now, we’re going to: 1. transform our chemical equations into ionic equa- tions which explicitly show the roles played by all of the ions appearing in a chemical equation.of the ions appearing in a chemical equation....
