Lab 2: The Simple Pendulum: ERROR REPORT SAR Physics Andrew M Kolchin I am very pleased with the improvement in quality of the lab reports I’ve received. Here is a description of the major problems that are still common in the lab reports I’m seeing. 1. GRAPHING TECHNIQUES: (a) Reading your own graph incorrectly when taking slopes . For example, reporting the rise and run as the number of boxes spanned without regard to the scale of the vertical and horizontal axes. Units are always omitted in these errors and could have alerted the writer to the problem. (b) Drawing Best Fit Lines : In drawing a best fit line to a set of points, you want the line you draw to come as closely as possible to all of the points. Try to imagine a line in which the sum of the distances of the points from the line is as small as possible. That is what you are striving for. Also, don’t force your line to go through the origin. (c)
