Right-Hand rule : Be able to find the direction of the magnetic field given the direction of the current that causes it and vice versa. 3. Magnetic Poles : like poles repel; unlike poles attract. Poles only occur in pairs. 4. Be able to draw or recognize magnetic field lines between magnetic poles. II. Magnetic Materials 1. What causes a material to be magnetic ( unpaired electron spins ). 2. Know the types of materials by their magnetic proper- ties: nonmagnetic, ferromagnetic, antiferromag- netic . 3. Know how the spins in a material relate to a materials magnetic properties. 4. Magnetic Domains , and how an external magnetic field can magnetize a material. (for example: how does an electromagnet work? Why is a stronger magnet made with a coil with an iron core? Why is a stronger magnet made with a coil with more turns?) 1 III. Electromagnetic Induction 1. Faradays Law : Voltage is generated (or induced) across a coil by a changing magnetic field passing through the area of the coil.
