Universal Gravitation We have already talked about the gravitational force from several points of view: As the cause of objects falling to earth with acceleration : g = 10 m/s 2 ( ”little g” valid near the Earth’s surface). As a type of force field set up by an object to which other objects feel attracted. The strength of the attraction depends on the distance between two objects. As the source of the centripetal force keeping planets in orbit about the sun, and the moon in orbit about the Earth. 1
