Prof. Pam's Intro to Philosophy Spring 2011 Essay #1, p. 1 PHIL 101 Essay #1 (25 points) This first essay is a short, one page essay. Please follow the same guidelines as with the diagnostic essay exam: 1 inch margins, make sure the header is correct, and that the spacing is correct (double spaced, no extra space between paragraphs). Grading criteria 1. Poor grammar and formatting issues will lower your grade. So please proofread and check your paper against the guidelines. 2. You must answer the question and not some other question. It sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how many students fail to answer the question that is posed. 3. You show evidence of having taken the assignment seriously and offered a non-trivial answer. Have you thought of counter-examples to your view? Have you considered objections someone might have to your view? As you begin thinking about the question, you might want to experiment with asking yourself "why?" or "how?" to each proposed answer you come up with.
