Effect of Exercise Training on Systolic BP in Hypertensives 76% of groups (56 of 74) decreased systolic BP significantly with exercise training Reduction averaged 10.6 mm Hg from an average initial value of 153 mm Hg BUT, 24% did not reduce BP with exercise! Let’s see…153 - 10.6 = 142.4 mmHg…hmmmm Is this good news or bad news???

Effect of Exercise Training on Diastolic BP in Hypertensives 81% of groups (59 of 73) decreased diastolic BP significantly with exercise training Reduction averaged 8.2 mm Hg from an average initial value of 97 mm Hg What about the other 19%??? 97 - 8.2 = 89.8 mmHg Is this good news or bad news???

Changes in blood pressure in hypertensive patients according to the intensity of exercise-training program Training Intensity <70% VO 2max 70% VO 2max Systolic blood pressure Weighted average reduction 9.5 mm Hg 6.8 mm Hg Groups with significant reductions (%) 64 75 Total sample size 383 286 Diastolic blood pressure Weighted average reduction 7.0 mm Hg 6.8 mm Hg Groups with significant reductions (%) 78 73 Total sample size 477 237 Does Does intensity intensity of exercise have an effect? of exercise have an effect? So, about 75% respond to exercise training The average drop in SBP ~ 10mmHg, DBP ~ 8mmHg Lower intensity exercise (<70% VO2max) reduces BP at least as much as high intensity exercise
