Liberation Theology Impoverished peoples of the third world no longer want to be passive objects They want to be active subjects of their own history: -Human beings assume conscious responsibility for human destiny -God is to be found in humanity of man, Liberation (from sin) gives voice to oppressed peasants in Latin America; -Is the release from oppressive social reforms Critique of traditional religion and fundamentalism -Traditional religion: inward looking -Fundamentalism: literal word of doctrine The Question: how to use power: to oppress or be on behalf of the oppressed; gospel ought to be at work where oppressive structure (sphere of sin) are located Concern w/ Structures of Sin not individual Sinners -Sin oppression Not on individualism of sin, as individual transgression Sin in terms of structures of oppression -Liberation: freedom from sin, on 2 levels: Socioeconomic, psychosocial -Deliberate Strategy: “Preferential Option for the Poor” Preference implies the universality of God’s love that excludes no one.
