Midterm #3 Study Notes
The following notes may help you to prepare for Midterm #3 on April 4.
Midterm #3 will
on the material in Chapters 9-10, but an ability to master this material also requires mastery of
the material in Chapters 1-8 AND you will be asked questions that require a knowledge of the material in Chapters 1-8.
Approximately 60-70% of the material on the test will be from Chapters 9 and 10, the rest from earlier in the course.
The midterm will consist in questions that ask you to:
Define and provide examples of concepts used in class, focussing on concepts from Chapters 9-10, but including all
of the concepts covered to date. Keep in mind that all definitions you provide must avoid the weaknesses in
definitions covered in the material on evaluating definitions: for example, they must avoid circularity.
Reconstruct arguments, put them in Standard Form, as on the first and second midterm, identifying the conclusion,
premises and missing premises of arguments and diagram them, as on the second midterm.
Evaluate examples given on the midterm using the criterial approach and the fallacies covered in the text and
