6/11/11 1 Endocrine control Introduction to endocrine control Control involving brain and pituitary Mechanisms of hormone action 04 The goal of this lecture is to discuss basic endocrine control issues by introducing concepts associated with the mechanism of action of hormones under physiological and pathological conditions. The sections for this lecture are: Life is a series of chemical reactions occurring in compartmentalized environments. The main purpose of life is to keep itself alive Physiology, the study of how life works, is based on the simultaneous occurrence of the following three concepts: levels of organization structure / function relationship homeostatic regulation Introduction to endocrine control Endocrine system, glands, hormonal chemical structure Amine derived, peptide / protein, and steroid hormones Hormone transport, metabolism and excretion Hormone secretion can be affected by various pathways Control by plasma concentrations of ions and nutrients Control by neurons and by other hormones Control systems involving hypothalamus / pituitary Hypothalamic-pituitary endocrine and neural connection The hypothalamus and posterior pituitary hormones The hypothalamus and anterior pituitary hormones Feedback control of hypothalamus and anterior pituitary Endocrine control Mechanism of hormone action Hormone receptors Events elicited by hormone - receptor binding Hormone action and the integrator concept Types of endocrine disorders Primary and secondary endocrine pathologies Hypo- and hyper- secretion (and responsiveness)
