iVOCAB FOR FILM INTRO MIDTERM Shot: strip of motion picture film that has been taken in one uninterrupted running of the camera, then trimmed at either end in preparation for its insertion in the film o i.e. in Citizen Kane, the view / image of the sled ‘Rosebud’ being burned as the ending image of the film Three Dramatic Unities: ACTION, TIME, SPACE o Multiple shots, fragments but continuous unity o No rupture of space until the cut to the exterior o Hitchcock: classical ordering of traumatic and horrible events / things Scene: unit of dramatic action that possesses the 3 dramatic unities Sequence: series of scenes which form a distinct narrative unit, usually connected by space or time Segmentation: the process of breaking down a text into its constituent parts for purposes of analysis, form of textual analysis and it grows out of stopping a film and processing it Three-Act Structure: o 1 st act: introduces the audience to the world of story and principal characters; sets up main conflict around which the story will be built and announces a goal o 2 nd act: presents and elaborates obstacles to the characters in achieving goals o 3 rd act: resolution Phases of Production: o Pre-production: organization, screenplay (the blueprint of the screen) Take a script and look at it with cinematographer Create storyboards: figure out what sets are needed (pre-visualization) Budge o Production: shooting of the film Studios Call shots o Post-production: images are assembled and edited Modes of Production: means at the disposal of the produce o Studio Productions (Rear Window, Citizen Kane) o Independent Productions (Le Crime de Monsieur Lange) o Small Scale Productions (Moth Light, Welcome to Come) Films exist in different modes of production Narrative: formal system, chain of events in cause-effect relationship occurring in time and space Plot: data stream of sound and image (including non-diegetic); audio and visual
