Julianna Ritter FILM MIDTERM STUDY GUIDE Citizen Kane , Orson Welles (1941) Story of Kane but not seen through his point of view o Portrait of Kane: consists of flashbacks (early temporal moments) Objects of Kane’s life to represent his life Xanadu: similar patterns (in and out in the beginning and end of film) o Particular motifs: the gate ‘K’ o ‘No Trespassing’ o Credits Xanadu represents Kane: filled with his possessions, huge, overwhelming area, isolated, Xanadu is a space described as exotic and unfinished o Mysterious ‘lack’ o Xanadu becomes Kane / is Kane o Diverse space o Based on a Snow White drawing o ‘Witches quality’ to castle o We never lose our orientation because the light in the castle guides us o Golf course and menagerie – decay o Decadence has fallen to pieces with neglect o Each scene dissolves but the light remains Optical zoom Visual continuity Narrative purpose: light bulb represents Kane and when it goes out it prefixes his death If Kane is Xanadu, when the light goes out in Xanadu, Kane is dead
