(10 points) A particle moving along the x -axis with a velocity that depends on the displacement x according to v ( x ) x 4 , where is a positive constant. Find the force acting on the particle as a function of x . 2. (15 points) A car of mass m and negligible rolling friction is stalled at an intersection. At time t = 0, the driver gets out (after putting it in neutral gear so that it rolls freely) and applies a constant forward force F 0 to the car. Alarmed by other cars honking their horn at him because of how long he is taking to move his car out of the intersection, he starts at time t = t 1 ( t 1 > 0) to apply a force which increases linearly with time such that at time t = 2 t 1 the force has a value 2 F 0 . What is the total distance the car travels at between time t = 0 and t = 2 t 1 ? (Note: this problem should be considered equivalent to an idealized case of a block of mass m being pushed horizontally on a frictionless horizontal surface by a time-varying force.)
