Physics 325 Spring 2011 Homework 9A Name: ____________________________ Due: May 4, 2011 by 9am (in 325 box) NO LATE HOMEWORK ACCEPTED!!! 1. (10 points) Consider a bucket of water that is spinning about is vertical axis with angular velocity . Show that, once the water has settled into equilibrium, its surface will be a parabola. (Hint: Use cylindrical coordinates polar coordinates and remember that the surface is an equipotential under the combined influence of gravitational and centrifugal forces) 2. (10 points) (a) A baseball is thrown vertically up with initial speed 0 v from a point on the ground at latitude . Show that the ball will return to the ground a distance 3 0 2 4 cos 3 v g  to the west of its launch point. (b) Sketch the baseball’s trajectory as seen from the north (by an observer fixed to the earth) if it is thrown up at the equator ( 0 ). Compare this with the trajectory a ball dropped from a point above the equator and explain why the Coriolis effect moves the dropped ball to the east but the thrown ball to the west.
