John Domanick 11-11-10 Nbio 140b Paper 2 I read an article in Time magazine, “The 'Mommy Brain' Is Bigger: How Love Grows a New Mother's Brain” by Maia Szalavitz, which discussed a study regarding the size of a maternal brain. This study (Kim et al., 2010) looked at the sizes of a mother’s brain at 2-4 weeks postpartum and again at 2-4 months postpartum and found that in that time period there was an increased in volume of gray matter in the mother’s brain. Kim et al. examined postpartum structural changes in the brains of new mother’s, and the relationship between these changes and the expression of maternal behaviors. By taking high-resolution magnetic resonance images of the maternal brains at 2-4 weeks and 2-4 months postpartum, the authors found that there was indeed an increase in gray matter volume in the prefrontal cortex, parietal lobes, and midbrain section of the brain.
