Pontrello (email: [email protected]) Office: SSC 00-08B, (phone: 736-2545) Lab Supervisor: Mr. Gary Koltov (email: [email protected]) SSC 00-18 (Prep Room), (phone: 736-2575) (See for questions regarding instruments, glassware, etc.) Course Learning Goals and Objectives: Understand how basic concepts connect diverse chemical reactions Marginalize memorization and emphasize conceptual understanding of topics Develop confidence in understanding through group work and peer review Understand subject in context of current scientific literature examples Connect textbook reactions with laboratory practical techniques Read, follow, and adapt literature procedures for a reaction goal Complete reaction sequence to a target molecule with research applications Develop scientific writing skills through lab reports Course Description: This course will provide experience in the isolation and purification of organic compounds by recrystallization, distillation, and chromatography, and their characterization using analytical and instrumental methods. Prerequisite: A satisfactory grade (C- or better) in CHEM 18b or 19b or the equivalent. Corequisite: CHEM 25a. Dropping CHEM 25a necessitates written permission from the lab instructor to continue lab. Two semester hour credits. Class Times: Tuesday Lectures, 11:00 – 12:20pm in Gerstenzang 123. Lab Sections 1:00 – 5:20pm in SSC 00-08 (M, Section 1; T, Section 2; W, Section 3; R, Section 4; F, Section 5) Lecture and Lab Section attendance are mandatory. If you are more than 5 minutes late to lab, both your report and prelab will be considered late. Make-up labs require instructor approval and written documentation for an excused absence. Examinations will be given during Tuesday lectures. Office Hours:
