i. Summarize the case and identify the ethical issue posed in the case. Title: 187 cases of illegal logging in Peninsula Malaysia over 10 years The article highlights the increasing amount of illegal logging that happened in Peninsular Malaysia between 2008 and 2017 and action taken using the National Forestry Act 1984. According to the author of the article, there are total of 187 cases of illegal logging and 2,617 cases related to forest offense involving 514.61 hectares of land in Peninsular Malaysia on the stated year. The ministry of water, land and natural resources had done several actions to prevent illegal logging such as increase the area of forest reserve area. The forest reserve is a portion of state lands where commercial harvesting of wood products is excluded in order to capture elements of biodiversity. Due to the increasing amount of illegal logging, the forest reserve area has increased by 23,968 hectares or 0.5 percent over 10 years. Second action taken by the minister of the department, Tengku Zulpuri Shah Raja Puji will strengthen the enforcement efforts by amend the National Forestry Act 1984 where fine and penalties will be enforce to curb illegal logging activities done. If found guilty, high penalties will be given because the loss in biodiversity will take a very long time to recovered. Lastly the ministry also set up an enforcement team called "Elite Team" which stationed at the Forestry Department Peninsular Malaysia. This elite team are added into the personnel from 50 to 300 starting the year 2018. Illegal logging is the harvesting of wood that is in violation of national regulations. This could include harvesting timber from protected areas, felling protected species, or exceeding logging quotas. Illegal logging often takes place in countries with poor governance and law enforcement capacity, especially in tropical rainforests. Meanwhile, ethical issues occur when a given decision, scenario or activity creates a conflict with a society’s moral principles. Both individuals and businesses can be involved in these 1
conflicts, since any of their activities might be put to question from an ethical standpoint.
