Discussion Questions 1) The experimental objectives of this lab were to extract pigments from spinach leaves, perform TLC on the spinach leaf extract, and to determine the best solvent mixture to use to separate the pigments in the extract. As a group, we successfully met all three of the experimental objectives. We used a mortal and pestle to grind up the spinach leaves, mixed the grinded up sample in a 1:1 mixture of acetone and hexane, and then decanted the solution with a pipette to extract the pigments. Next we performed TLC on the spinach leaf extract, performing three different trials, each with a solvent containing different ratios of hexane and acetone. TLC was successfully performed using each of the solvents, however the most success, or the most separation between the pigments, was achieved using a 1:1 mixture of acetone and hexane. This was determined to be the best solvent mixture to use to separate the pigments in the extract. 2) As a group we are very confident in our conclusion. We successfully extracted
