He was learned in music, poetry, literature, history, and Buddhism. He dominated the court for 30 years as the controlling party of many emperors. Shenzong – A young Song Emperor Wang Anshi – Shenzong appointed him as his chief counselor. Wang proposed a series of sweeping reforms such as low interest loans and replacing labor service with a small tax. He also expanded state monopolies on tea, salt, and rice. Cheng Yi – A Neo-Confucian teacher who once said it was better for a widow to starve than to remarry. These types of teachings could have contributes to the downfall of women in Chinese society.
