o Terms Deus ex machina : “God out of machine.” When something is impossible and we half to do something crazy and impossible to achieve it. Comic relief : Getting over a tragic event. Epic : A very long narrative poem that is oral in style; on a serious subject; told in formal, elevated language and is centered on a divine or quasi-divine figure on whose actions depends a tribe, a nation, or even the entire human race. o Primary epic: Handed down solely through oral tradition. o Secondary epic: Written down from an oral epic. o Tertiary epic: A literary interpretation of an epic. An epic modeled off a real epic. Epic Hero : A male, privileged, noble, high-class, wealthy, who is either a warrior or warrior ruler. o 3 traits § Reputation (cares greatly about it) § Protection (protects people) § Courage and Wisdom – Fortitude el Sapientia (crosses boarders) o 3 paradoxes § Foe and hero share traits § Epic hero may act against his own people § Liminal person (crosses boarders)
