Themes 19:57 o Geography and the Environment and its effect on the People of the Americas The Mayans The Amazon Rainforest Was to the Mayans as the mountains were to the Greeks Extraordinarily dense Their cities developed far more in isolation than other civilizations They couldn’t tie their empire together Roads were very hard to build The Amazon Rainforest wasn’t the same lush environment for farming because nutrients were sucked into the rainforest Slash and burn technique was required for farming The Rainforest has very high humidity Caused for most artifacts to be reclaimed by the Rainforest Even rock was often reclaimed Less humid environments tend to yield more artifacts There were occasionally droughts They weren’t big enough to kill people but were enough to make them paranoid and become scared of their Gods Led to human sacrifice Human sacrifice was often a result as asking for life Most sacrifices were based on status Royalty was worth more For Aztecs it was volume The more people sacrificed the better
