Sociology: Media 12:03 What is the Media? Media is a technological device used for the purpose of communication Typically thought in terms of mass media Older forms: Newspapers/mags, radio, t.v. Newer forms: internet, Facebook <20 th  Century: media was primarily print early 20 th : print, film, radio mid 20 th : emergence of t.v. by the 1970’s: t.v. dominated and cable t.v. emerged steep decline in print media Late 1990’s: rise of the internet 2000’s: Social media and the internet (decline of print and t.v.?) A very brief history of the Media Media was initially funded by those that owned it There was no independent media Owner had direct influence on what was printed or played No balance reporting
