ESSAYS You will be required to write TWO essays for the final. One will be cumulative; one will cover material since the second midterm. I’m giving you here two possibilities for each question. On the exam itself, I will choose the question for each category. In your essays, be sure to draw on a wide variety of course materials: lectures, textbook, and primary sources (including the 3 autobiographical books and the reserves materials for breakouts). Second Midterm 1) At the turn of the nineteenth century, Federalists and Jeffersonian Republicans argued over the ideals and structure of American government. Whose vision won out in American history to 1865? In your discussion, be sure to define Republicanism and Federalism and identify what major figures, trends, political parties, or events reflected or supported the respective ideologies ca 1800-1865. Define Federalism: o Strong central government: powers to tax, raise troops, coin money o Constitution o Leaders: Hamilton, Madison (initially), John Jay, John Adams o Federalist party: later called the Whigs o Vision: Hamilton wanted America to become an economic giant and focused on industry, trade, and business. To accomplish this Hamilton wanted a centralized bank and a good relationship with Europe. Wanted to model America after British economic system. National government consumes state debt and creates national debt to establish credit. o Trends: Federalists Papers started a trend. Marbury v. Madison increased the power of govt judicial review. Supported the rich and merchant classes of people. Middle to upper class. Mainly in urban areas; mostly the north. Define Republicanism:
