Chien Chiu Hsiung English 2 Professor Megan Murtha September 21, 2009 In the play The Glass Menagerie, Tennessee Williams describes Tom as a man who is hates his own life, feels trap in which he cannot escape from his family because his family is unable to support themselves since their father left them. Tom wanting to run away, but could not stand hurting his mother and sister like his father did to them. In The Glass Menagerie , Tom views his life with his family and the warehouse as a burden and feels as if he is suffocating in his confine world and he is unable to escape. Williams discusses Tom’s life with his family after his father left them on their own and Tom becomes the provider of the family. The opening scene shows Tom and his mother fighting over how he should eat his breakfast (6). This scene which is shown in the beginning of the play tells us that mother and son relationship is growing apart each day. There are several confrontations between Tom and Amanda and these shows that Tom is getting tire of living with
