Chien Chiu Hsiung English 2 Professor Megan Murtha October 5, 2009 In the short story “The Wall,” Pablo and his friends spend the cold night in the cellar at the old hospital and they quickly learn that all three of them are sentence to death. When they learn they are going to be executed, they all realize that life is a precious thing. In “The Wall,” Jean- Paul Sartre discusses Pablo near death sentence and his realization of how life can feel so precious when he is just few hours away from dying. When Pablo, Tom, and Juan are sentenced to be shot to death by morning, the three friends suddenly realize that they have lived a short life. For Pablo, death has never come to his mind until now because he says “I never had any reasons to, but now the reason was here and there was nothing to do but think about it” (4). He did not expect to die for helping his friend and put his life on the hold for that reason he never thought about his death until now. The three friends decide to spend their remaining hours remembering their past. Pablo looks at Tom and he
