Chien Chiu Hsiung English 1 TF9 Professor Miller 02/17/09 “Running for His Life” Gilbert early life experiences have been haunting him for the past decade. His early childhood in Burundi was tough. He lived in a country where racial conflicts between Hutus and Tutsis people were going on for two generations. Gilbert attended Kibimba School and felt in love with running, but the tension grew between Hutus and Tutsis when the president was assassinated by Tutsis soldiers. All Hutus students and professors with machetes turned against the Tutsis. Fear went through Gilbert head when he was put into the burning room with other Tutsis. However, he overcame his fear of being burn alive and able to escape from his own death. Michael Hall’s essay “Running for His Life” emphasizes Gilbert life was filled with challenges ranges from racism, fear and bravery. Gilbert has been running away from his country because of racism in Burundi. Just ten years ago Hutus President was assassinated as a result many angry Hutus with machetes were out
