Unformatted text preview: Hsiung Chien Chiu Hsiung Core 2.3 Professor Wilson May 25, 2010 My group includes Keming Chen and Kimberly Chu and our change the world project is to change SEEK program registration process at Brooklyn College. All senior CUNY colleges offer SEEK program to first time college students. The SEEK (Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge) program offers college students with academic, financial, and counseling assistance to help students succeed in college. This program was created to assist in providing equality of higher education to students who otherwise would not have such access (SEEK Overview). The benefits of being a SEEK student is that the program offers a range of instructional, financial, and counseling support services to its students. The program activities are designed to aid students in meeting the challenges of college and to offer a supportive environment for all its students (SEEK). The SEEK program in all CUNY colleges operate somewhat differently such as their registration system. When compared with other CUNY SEEK Program and regular Brooklyn College students, SEEK students at Brooklyn College register their classes differently. They need to meet with their counselor in order to schedule for their classes. So our project focuses on changing SEEK registration procedures by letting students register classes online. We chose to improve the SEEK registration procedures because as a SEEK student, we feel that the procedure to register for our classes is a hassle and feel like it’s inconvenient for SEEK students to come to school every time they want to schedule for their courses. We just want SEEK department to remove the “STOP (s)” on “WebSIMS” to let all their students register for their classes online instead of going to their counselor and give them the freedom to register Hsiung for more than 12 credits. By letting students do online registration, students are saving their time by not waiting on the registrar line and they can register at their own leisure. Sometimes students are unavailable to register at their appointed time because they have classes and when students are free during the common hour, their counselor have to go out for lunch and its very inconvenient for most students. When SEEK students try to register online, the system prevents us from registering. The SEEK department have put up what they called a “STOP(s)” on all SEEK students registration page. This way when students try to register online they get this “STOP(s)” sign which prevent any students from registering online. All SEEK students in Brooklyn College who need to register for their classes must to go their counselor and consult the classes they want to take with them. The counselor checks to see if the classes are available. This is way for the department to limit their students who have less than 3.0 GPA to take no more than 12 credits per semester....
