CHEM 1A Course Syllabus Fall 2011 CHEM 1A: General Chemistry I Chemistry 1A is a general chemistry course intended for students with previous success in chemistry and a background in algebra. It is the highest level introductory chemistry course and satisfies the foundation requirements for many majors including chemistry, chemical engineering, biology, and pre-med. This course involves the study of the nature and classification of matter. It develops the necessary mathematical tools, vocabulary, and symbolic language; and relates the properties of materials to the subatomic electronic structure. These concepts will be used to gain insight into chemical and physical changes and the accompanying changes in energy associated with these processes. The information in this course will facilitate further leaning in a variety of disciplines, and will increase a student’s understanding of the physical universe around them.
