Testing a Theory When I was in the Air Force I was a jet mechanic. With this job there was many time that that we had to come up with theories on what was the problem with a jet. There was one time when we had an f-16 where the problem on the jet was that the exhaust nozzles would automatic go in to afterburner mode even though the jet was not in after burner. We had to figure out what was wrong with the jet and we had to do it as quickly as possible. The jet recently had some major maintenance done, so the first step was to check all of the maintenance that was done to ensure that it was done correctly. We checked all of the maintenance and had no luck finding the problem. We have books that have what is called fault trees that are used to help identify problems. The books use previous information that has been found out to help find a current problem. We went through all of the fault trees and still had no luck. We then had to start checking everything. One of the guys on my team thought that it was a hydraulic problem
