ARTISAN -second on the social hierarchy in the colonial cities -artisan system of work -relatively low yet they are proud of what they do. -artisanal system is pre industrial work -the group is made up of three: master, journeyman, and apprentice. -they were skilled craftsmen is specific trades -evolved from european craft guild -they had no regular working hours. -no big factories -seasonal shifts in amount and character of work -work more integrated into everyday life -worked at home often -often taught from father to son -very independent -breaks down during the early 19th century WEALTH OF NATIONS -published the same year as the declaration of inpendence, 1776. -by Adam Smith -advocates for individual and universal rights, liberty and rationalism -natural rights is a blow to the corporate ideal -the ideas presented here led Thomas Jefferson to write the declaration -advocates for a limited role of government -it was the beginning of modern econ -theme: people will work for their best interest -introduces the idea of division of labor THE INVISIBLE HAND -introduced by smith -places faith in the rationality of individuals acting in their own self interest
