1 Studying abroad in Italy has opened my eyes to the ongoing destruction of the identity of culinary arts by fast food . Living in America my whole life I have been taught to always be in a rush and I have always thought this was normal until I made it to Italy . Here in Italy no one is in a rush in their daily life and this includes their cooking of meals and even more so than that their eating of these meals . In the forthcoming paper I am going to paint a picture for you describing the attempted destruction of the Italian culinary identity and how the Slow Food movement is the front man in the defense of Italian culture . According to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation , 25 percent of Americans consume fast food on a daily basis which means approximately 77 ,730,354 Americans eat fast food daily . This is an astonishing number and is a statistic that many other countries want to avoid which is why the Slow Food movement was started . In this paper I am going to discuss why the Slow Food movement was started , who the members of the Slow Food movement are and why they are members in such an organization . After thorough explanation I will continue to explain how prominent the Slow Food movement is and I will display the current awareness of people in countries that are a part of the Slow Food movement . Through explanation of these areas I will finalize my paper with the impact the Slow Food movement has had so far in its lifespan . During the explanation of this topic I strongly believe that I will influence the reader as to the importance of the Slow Food movement

2 and how the Slow Food movement has led Italians to bond together over long family meals and has saved Italian culture . The Slow Food movement originated in 1986 to counter the opening of a McDonalds at the base of the Spanish Steps in Rome , Italy. The organization was not official until 1989 when the founding Manifesto of the international Slow Food movement was signed in Paris , France by delegates from 15 countries. The Slow Food movement is an association that is non-profit and is supported by its members . When it originated in 1986 the Slow Food movement was made on the principles of protecting the identity of local food traditions and the food that people eat especially the heritage such as “where it comes from , how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world .” The philosophy behind the Slow Food movement is one where they believe that good food should be enjoyed , but also deserves respect from the consumer. The vision of the Slow Food organization is “ We envision a world in which all people can access and enjoy food that is good for them , good for those who grow it and good for the planet .” Through this vision statement Slow Food is displaying what they want the world to be like and this includes everyone having a reasonable amount of food . The Slow Food organization does not simply state this as their vision statement because the way in which the food is grown and cooked is also very important . Members in the Slow Food organization do not want people to eat
