Internet Addiction i Excessive Internet use by Students. Good or Bad? Mohammed W. Makda ESL 408, Section A Delia Cozzarelli April 9, 2010 Excessive Internet use by Students. Good or Bad? Today, internet is a part of every individual’s life. Many are addicted to the internet. The World Wide Web is used by all types of people such as businessmen, artists, parents and students on a large scale. Being, a student, I use internet for almost everything I do. I use it for academics, watching movies, playing games, downloading software, and the list goes on. I would call myself an internet addict. A deeper understanding of this addiction would be gained by studying the following questions: a. How is internet affecting the overall development of students? b. Does internet really help students in their education or changes the entire meaning of education?

Internet Addiction c. Internet did not exist several years back. Still then students excelled and achieved great heights. What needs are now which force students to use internet? d. Prime targets of scammers are students from high school and college. What measures should the school take to prevent such scam? e. Should the school restrict usage of certain websites in public areas of school? Internet is a versatile resource in every student’s life and thus takes education to a completely new level for global competence. More than half of the students worldwide use the internet (Debell & Chapman, 2006). Internet is used by educational institutions as a medium to impart education to students. Some keep it optional while some make it mandatory. It is no hidden fact that students use the internet. Students use internet for various purposes. These include social use, entertainment use, academic use, and other miscellaneous uses. “The Internet supports a broad range of activities. Students use the Internet as a medium to communicate, to find information, to have fun, and to do homework.”(Debell & Chapman, 2006) Nowadays, internet has become a medium for the social life of students. There are various methods on the internet for students to get in touch with loved ones, colleagues or their professors. Services such as email, instant messengers, and networking websites are used by students frequently. Students who are away from home, like international students, internet helps them to share photos, messages and files through email and vice-versa. Moreover, applications also allow instant messaging in which users can send messages and emotions to recipients within seconds. There are some extended instant messaging applications who also allow audio and video conferencing at absolutely no cost. It is very feasible for students to use these services to communicate with distant ones. On the other hand, postal mail and telephone
