Working Definition Two Main Issues Approaches Components of Theories HOW DO WE THINK ABOUT PERSONALITY? Class answers : the way someone is perceived by others and them self characteristics social interactions mannerisms, speech behavior, etc. Consistency/Continuity Traits are similar across time Organizing from within People have choice/control Studying what the person is bringing in to it Summary Personality is a summary of who the person is Character traits WHY PERSONALITY? Compared to Social Psychology Same people are different in different situations (social psych) Focus is on the situation and the overall reaction(everyone) VS Different people are different in same situation (psych of personality) Everyone will have different reactions to each situation Focus is on the individual Relation to Abnormal Psychology/Clinical Psychology Abnormal-focuses on the abnormal range of personality traits, problems or abnormal functioning Psychology of Personality-focuses on the norm/individual range of personality and individual differences Curiosity Why do people do what they do Prediction of others behavior Be able to predict what others will do or react Comfort in knowing this Able to adjust the situation and know what to expect WORKING DEFINITION Personality is the dynamic organization, within the individual, of psychophysical systems that create the persons characteristic patterns of behavior, thoughts, and feelings. WORKING DEFINITION: COMPONENTS Organization Personality traits are arranged in a certain way which determines how they react to people Dynamic Personality is active Its changing It has process Psychophysical Personality is a psychological concept that ha a physical basis Create Personality is a casual force not just reactions We bring something to the situation and we can change it or create it Patterns There are consistencies in personality Behavior, thoughts, and feelings Personality comes across in a variety of ways It influences behavior, thoughts, feelings TWO MAIN ISSUES 1. Individual Differences focuses in the ways people differ from one another and understanding this difference 2. Intrapersonal Functioning focuses on the process within the person that causes the personality and the behavior Different amounts of emphasis from different approaches APPROACHES Trait What are the indiv. differences how do we measure them....
