CHEN 3010 Applied Data Analysis Fall 2004 Names:__________________________ __________________________ Workshop #15 Inferences on Proportions Background When working with scientific measurements and engineering measurements of product quality, we usually want to have continuous quality measurements, e.g., product purity in %, some physical property like viscosity, but there are practical situations where the only measurement available is a pass/fail type, e.g., a dimension meets or does not meet a given tolerance, a solid- state relay (electronic switch) works or it doesn’t. a polymer “living hinge” passes or fails a fatigue test. When working with pass/fail testing of a sample of product, we can convert our measurements into the proportion of the product that fails (an admittedly negative approach) or passes. Since, hopefully, failure rates are low (a positive attitude returns), it is typical to use that proportion, commonly called the fraction defective . If the product is sampled from a large population (a somewhat endless stream of discrete products coming off an assembly line is a good example) and a background or population fraction defective, p , is assumed to exist, the fraction defective ( β ) calculated from a random sample of n product items is governed by the binomial distribution. In this exercise, you will make hypothesis test and confidence interval calculations based on the binomial distribution and the normal approximation to the binomial distribution. Since it is not convenient to compute binomial probabilities by hand nor are there tables of the binomial distribution in your text, these calculations will be carried out using Excel. Procedure 1. Head out to the lab stations, log on, and launch Excel. 2. Enter your group number and names of group members present in the upper-left corner of the worksheet. Enter the date also. Do not use cells in rows 5 and below for this.
