CHEN 3010 Applied Data Analysis Fall 2004 Group Members: _____________________________ _____________________________ _____________________________ _____________________________ Workshop #6: The Normal Distribution Objective: The normal distribution is an important tool used to model random behavior in engineering measurements. In this exercise, the goal is to take data by measuring the weight of a common packaged product and see if the normal distribution describes the variability of the data obtained. Our product is a small bag of coffee. Packaging for products like coffee requires that a specified weight be placed in each bag. Such packaging is typically an automated process with a certain amount of variability. Questions arise regarding the packaging process, such as Is the mean package weight “centered” on a specified weight? Is the variability acceptable to the customer? Does the variability behave according to a normal distribution?
