Manny Erives PHY117N M: 2-5 pm Lab Chapter 2: Mirrors Abstract : The goal of this lab was to become familiarized with the physics of mirrors by characterizing the behavior of light when it reflects off a plane mirror and a concave mirror from different distances. The plane mirror experiment showed that the image produced by the plane mirror would be of equal distance away from the mirror as the object and also have the same size as the object regardless of the position of the object away from the plane mirror. In contrast, an object very far away from the concave mirror will produce an image that is real, inverted, and smaller than the actual object. At the center of curvature, the image will be real, inverted, and of the same size as the object. An object placed between the focal length and the center of curvature will produce a real, inverted image that is larger than the object. However, when the object is moved to a distance smaller than the focal length, the concave mirror will produce an upright, virtual image that is magnified. All of these observations can be examined by experimenting with the mirror equations. 2.1: Plane Mirrors
