HEALTH PROMOTION How can we cope with stress? 1. Try to take control Research with rats and humans indicates that the absence of control over stressors causes a rise in stress hormones, an increase in blood pressure and compromised immune system functioning. Rats - Weiss ( 1977 ) Both “executive” rats and “subordinate” rats received shocks, but only the former could turn a wheel to turn o f the shock. “Executive” rats that had control over stopping the shocks were no more likely to develop ulcers than the control rats ( that did not receive shocks ) ; the “subordinate” rats, however, that had no control over stopping the shocks, were more likely to develop ulcers.

Humans - Langer and Rodin ( 1976 ) Gave two groups of residents at a nursing home a di f erent speech: a perceived control group ( were told they had control over much of what goes on at the nursing home ) and a comparison group ( given the same speech but parts about them making decisions and being responsible were left out ) . For example, the residents were told that a movie would be shown on two nights next week. Residents in the perceived control group were told it was up to them to determine on which night they wanted to see the movie whereas residents in the comparison group were simply assigned to one night or the other.
