The person giving the orders was close at hand and is perceived to be a legitimate authority Fgure 2.The authority Fgure was supported by a prestigious institution ( e.g., Yale ) 3. The victim was depersonalized or at a distance ( e.g., in another room ) 4.There were no other role models for deFance ( e.g., no other participants were seen disobeying the experimenter )

SOCIAL INFLUENCE Group Infuence How does the presence of others a f ect our behavior? Social Facilitation refers to the phenomenon by which we give stronger responses on simple or well - learned tasks in the presence of others. Triplett ( 1898 ) noticed cyclists’ racing times were faster when they competed against each other than when they competed with a clock. Towler ( 1986 ) found that after a light turns green, drivers take about 15 % less time to travel the Frst 100 yards when another car is present as opposed to absent.
