Katelyn McGee CWV-101 March 18, 2020 Jeff Jibben Benchmark - Ethical Dilemmas Ethical dilemmas are situations in which a choice must be made. These choices often come with consequences that impact the rest of our lives, and even the lives of others in some instances. The way in which humans navigate through ethical dilemmas is usually shaped by the worldview in which they hold, and in turn the choice they make may further shape a person’s worldview itself. In this essay, we will analyze the ethical dilemma of abortion through the lens of a Christian worldview, as well as, compare that to how an atheist may approach this situation. Ethical Dilemma The ethical dilemma we will be discussing involves a woman named Susan, who is a successful careerwoman. Susan has been trying to conceive for quite some time and has finally become pregnant. After a blood test, Susan receives the news that her baby has Down Syndrome and is advised to abort the baby. Susan decides to consult Richard, who is a Professor of evolutionary biology and has devoted his career to minimize human suffering. Richard suggests abortion to avoid a life of suffering for them both but says she must be the one to make this choice on her own. Core Beliefs In the Christian faith the topic of abortion seems to heavily include the use of biblical scripture. One of the Ten Commandments is “Thou shall not kill” and that passage can weigh 1
heavy on a Christian heart when considering abortion, as many view abortions as killing or taking another life (Exodus 20:13, KJV). Another biblical verse that resonates when dealing with this ethical dilemma is Jeremiah 1:4-5 says "Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.".
