PREFACE 1 WELCOME It gives us great pleasure to welcome you to the module General Management (MNG2016). In order to ensure that you share our enthusiasm for this field of study, we urge you to read this overview thoroughly. Refer back to it as often as you need to, since it will make studying this module a lot easier. Because the field of management is extremely dynamic and challenging, the learning content and activities in the study guide will provide you with opportunities to explore the latest developments in the field and will help you to discover management as it is practiced today. We hope that you will enjoy the module. 2 PURPOSE OF THE MODULE The purpose of this module, in the broader context of the BCom degree, is to provide you with graduate-level knowledge, applied competence and skills related to general management principles (with special emphasis on the management functions of planning, organising, leading and control) that will prepare you to be employable managers, workers or entrepreneurs and contributors to society and the business community. 3 LINK TO OTHER MODULES This module is not an entity on its own and because it forms an integral part of the Bachelor's degree in Business Management, the purpose and the learning outcomes of this module are aimed at developing your expertise and abilities in the field of business management. General Management (MNG2016) will provide you with the foundation for further studies in management. You would normally continue your studies with the two strategic management modules in the third year (MNG301A and MNG301B) if you want to specialise in management. 4 MODULE OUTCOMES 4.1 Specific outcomes (SOs) of this module When you have worked through this module, you will be able to SO 1 apply management skills, roles and functions in the wider context of the organisation as an open system, giving appropriate consideration to ethical and corporate social responsibility issues.
