Lecture 6 IT”S JUST A PHASE: Real Gases Pre-class assignment 1. You will need to download a program called Molecular Workbench from http://mw.concord.org/modeler/ (This is the same program you used for the pre-class assignment for Lecture 5.) Open molecular workbench software once you have downloaded it. Double click on “Library of Models” on the right side of the screen that comes up. Near the top of the screen, it says search the library. Type in the word “helium,” and click return. Click on the first model on the list that comes up. You should be on a page with the title below: Examine the model called: Exploring Potential Energy in Phase Changes: Chemical Potential Energy in Boiling Helium http://mw2.concord.org/public/student/activities/dan/potential/boiling.cml a. Describe the small piece of solid helium. b. Heat the helium slowly until you have a gas of helium atoms moving independently. Describe in detail what you see as the temperature increases. You should make at least 5 distinct observations. c.
