D11 Into the Muck response 1 The first thing that stood out to me and really stuck in my mind for a long time was the story about Joe’s grandfather and how his gambling addiction eventually left him bankrupt, and took a toll on the health of Joe’s grandmother. The way that his grandfather lost his entire retirement at the casino and how the grandfather and grandmother were eventually spending all of their time at the casino and living out of their car. This is a huge example of someone chasing their losses. The grandfather was so consumed with hitting it big and winning it all back that he could not or would not see the toll that it was taking on his wife. This story is explained from pages 47 to 59, but the most poignant quote is on page 56. It reads, “The gambling lifestyle has the potential to be a killer; it can destroy your body, your mind, your family, and your values. The last line about the values especially struck me. It is clear from Joe’s prior description of his grandfather that he was not a bad man. He cared about his family and his grandchildren, and had done a respectable
