Aguilera 1 Claudia Aguilera 3/7/2011 Final Draft Karen Kalteissen Citizens of this World As human being we are all common but different. We have different skin types, different type of hair, we come from different places, and we are also raised in different ways. America, a country where people come from all over the world, is a nation full of diversity and differences. Michael Kamber, a photojournalist from the New York Times, uses his techniques in his essay “Toil and Temptation” to tell the stories of many, but particularly two immigrant brothers facing a new life with new challenges that increase for being immigrants and undocumented. In this es- say, these two brothers represent an image of past, present and future immigrants. Meanwhile, Lenore Look, a graduate from Princeton and a prestigious writer shares her experience in a trip to her parent’s hometown; China. She mentions how this trip open her eyes and helped her to represent herself by what she truly was, considering her identity; a chinese. The places where we are raised and the manners we are taught are factors that defines us as a person, and influence our lives and the way we develop as human beings and citizens of the world. Children of immigrants and immigrants themselves can have a hard time searching for something to identify themselves with. Having two places to identify themselves with makes them having kind of a double personality or also live a double life. In the case of author Look she mentions that “I was in complete denial of any deeper links to China. In a society where remak- ing oneself is nearly a national religion, I was well on my way to being what I wanted to be: white” (237) Many children of immigrants parents have trouble finding something to hold on to. In Look’s case she felt embarrassed of being chinese and she tried for most of her life to destroy what was in her from that culture. For many people is hard to maintain their personality and identity is a place where they get humiliated for who they are. As author Look says that in a land

Aguilera 2 where people get stereotyped and where the ones who do not fit in have a hard time, to have a life with a double standard is the way of loosing one’s identity. When author Kamber writes about immigrant’s life, he mentions an specific guy and he says “His life in New York is a secret he keeps from his family” (200).
