Stephanie Darden 9-16-02 Dr. Alexander Biology 201 Statistics Lab Introduction In today’s society, statistics is word that seems to be heard everywhere. One hears it on the radio, in the news, and in magazines. Maybe one hears about statistics so much now, because it is an integral part of our society now. It is fundamental in modern applications such as the scheduling of airline reservations, marketing, experimental design, traffic engineering, and the Census. Statistics is the branch of mathematics concerned with the collection, organization, and analysis of numerical data. In fact, science is statistical. This means that scientific laws do not tell with certainty how nature behaves, scientific laws merely describe how nature has behaved within certain limits and how it is likely to behave within the limits again, under similar circumstances. Statistics is used to determine what the limits are, under any particular set of conditions, and to work out the probability of the reoccurrence of any given set of events, from past examples. Statistics has proven to be a very versatile tool for all scientists. It has applications in many fields such as Biology, in the study of populations. Methods and Materials Coin Tossing Within the group that we were placed in during class, we designated a flipper. When Marcus, our designated flipper, tossed the standard mint quarter, he held his hand very steady. Then he flipped the quarter with a quick flick of his thumb. The quarter flipped quickly in the air. Marcus caught the quarter, and if he didn’t catch it, we scrapped that flip.
